Escrow disclosure · Version 0.1
Escrow
Duel Limited acts as the escrow agent for every contract on this platform. This page explains exactly where your money sits, who can move it, and under what rules.
How your stake is custodied
At the moment you sign, Duel Limited captures a payment authorisation against your nominated card through Stripe Connect. Captured funds sit in a Stripe-held balance under a dedicated connected account for Duel Limited, not commingled with Duel’s operating account.
Duel Limited does not hold custody of raw funds. Stripe, a licensed payment processor, holds them on behalf of Duel Limited pursuant to Stripe’s own regulated arrangements. Duel issues instructions to Stripe to release funds; Stripe is the custodian.
When money moves
- At signing — your stake is authorised but not yet captured. In duel mode, both parties must authorise before the contract starts.
- At programme start — stakes from both parties are captured into escrow.
- On each missed point— the corresponding slice is transferred, net of payment-processor fees, from the escrow balance to the other party (or your nominated beneficiary) and to Duel Limited’s operating account according to the split you signed.
- At settlement — the remaining escrow balance attributable to passed points is returned to the player.
What can go wrong
If Duel Limited becomes insolvent, funds held inside Stripe’s balance remain the property of the stakers until they are transferred out under valid contract rules. Claims would be made against Stripe’s balance, not Duel Limited’s general assets.
If Stripe suffers an outage that delays a settlement, Duel will keep you informed. No point outcome changes; only the timing of a transfer is delayed.
Card processing fees
Card payments incur ~1.9% + NZ$0.30 per charge under Stripe’s standard NZ rates. These fees are the only deduction from returned stake on passed points. Forfeited slices are net of the same fees.
Currency
Stakes are denominated in NZD. AU residents may be charged in AUD at the then-current rate; the AUD equivalent is fixed at signing and used for all downstream calculations.
Draft. Stripe Connect sandbox wiring in progress; this document will be updated once live account onboarding is complete.
